Marissa Nadler gig
13 May 2008 ![]()
Tonight we went to see Marissa Nadler and Jesse Sykes play a gig at the Glee Club in Birmingham.
It was such a small room, we grabbed two first row seats and awaited Jesse Sykes to take the stage, as if we were kids waiting for the coolest magic show.
Jesse sat down with her guitar and her band member, Phil Wandscher. She looked beautiful and serious and they began to play a song. It was sublime and I fell instantly in love with her sad, ethereal voice. Her guitar playing was simple and steady and it made me feel the natural warmth one feels from heart felt, well crafted songs.
Jesse explained that she and her guitarist had had trouble getting into the U.K. due to visa confusion and various other problems on this tour but we were so glad that they had won over the difficulties and managed to play this small and intimate gig.
I felt that I was watching a true Rock ‘n’ Roll heroine and each song was a treasure.
Not long after jesse Sykes left the stage, Marissa Nadler took the stage.
She looked so young and confident and played ‘ Dying Breed ‘ and Sylvia and some of her brand new songs.
She’s a very good performer and I felt very privileged to be so close to such a great artist. Her voice is beautiful and her guitar playing, although simple, was solid and strong.
Watching these two brilliant artists made me feel excited about playing my own music on the road again.
I spoke with Jesse after the show and bought all her records, she was cool and seemed to be having a lot of fun on the road with Marissa. I can’t wait to have some time listening to her music and getting to know her songs better.
I also spoke with Marissa who was quite reserved but also sweet, I probably came across to Jesse and Marissa as kind of odd, I was so happy to meet them both and pretty overwhelmed!
I guess I vaguely explained that I make records too and would l love to play with them some time, they probably thought I was crazy : ) (they were probably correct : )
