Wears The Trousers Odetta Tribute Album

17 November 2009

I have covered the song ‘All The Pretty Little Horses’ released November 30th. Alan Lacroix and Jane South joined me in the studio to recreate the trrack which the wonderful Odetta herself once sang.

‘All The Pretty Little Horses’  is like a nursery rhyme in its structure and melody. It apparently has its origuins in the slave ballads of the US plantations. When Alan Pedder, the editor of Wears The Trousers magazine invited me to cover one of Odetta’s songs for the album he planned to release as a tribute to the great blues folk singer I was very excited. However my excitement turned to insecurity as I wondered how I could ever capture the beautiful depth and gutteral soul of Odetta’s wonderful voice.
I decided to re work as I love the haunting words and melody changes of the song, of course the way that Odetta imbued it with sorrow and mystery is inimitable but I decided to approach the vocals from a lighter and folkier perspective.Having heard Alan Lacroix’s masterful epic guitar pieces some time before, I thought he would be a great person to work with oin this track, his approac to guitar music is a wonderful mix of complex classical comopsition and original experimentation, with ever evolvimg pattern and structure.
To my great pleasure, after bouncing ideas around,Alan came up with a solid new rendition of the original chord pattern which gavce the song a more medieval, pastoral vibe.
Jane South who plays flute in my band also joined us, she is amazing at picking up an idea and running with it and I love playing and recording with her.
We recorded the track at my favorite London recording studio, The Way. Luke Buttery engineered the track and he and Steve Abu Nab very kindly helped us get everything recorded and mixed in a day. Everyone had something special to say about Odetta’s music and we were all very happy to contribute to the album which is called Beautiful Star The Songs of Odetta and contains covers by some of the best female musicians around.

All profits from sales of the album will be split evenly between two charities chosen by Wears The Trousers in recognition of their incredible work on behalf of women.

The Fawcett Society ( is the UK’s leading organisation campaigning for equality between women and men, making real differences in women’s lives by creating awareness, leading debate and driving change. The Women’s Resource Centre ( works to bring women’s organisations together, helping them to be more effective and sustainable.

Hi Kelli. How’s your trip going? I enjoy reading your blogs and biographical stories, not to mention listening to your music. Your work with the various musicians around the world is great stuff and is so creative. Have you ever considered writing an autobiography? I’ll bet a lot of people would love to read it.
